Major foot swelling leads to some sort of funny jokes at work...

Ok, so this morning was the first time in my entire pregnancy that I couldn't put my winter boots on.  Live in WI and dang it is getting cold.  Was about 28 this morning.  Anyways...couldn't zip the damn things up.  Had to settle on a pair of flats for the day.

By noon, my feet were swelling out of the tops of my shoes.  I had giant purple/red rings where the sides were.  I went to show a co-worker because I'm at risk for preclampsia (she knows the symptoms).  Another co-worker saw and asked if I had "sausage toes" too.  Man...I could have probably dealt with the word cankle, but "sausage toes" sort of made me giggle.

On the sausage toes note, any suggestions for how to deal with the swelling?  Keeping my feet up at work isn't going over very well...

  • I can totally relate -  I wear the short sport type of socks - my "ankles" look like muffin tops spilling out!  I bought some Ugg wanna be boots this just to hide my disappearing ankles.  I was prepared for swelling - but sausage toes is a great way to describe it!!!!

  • My sausage toes appear to be connected to loaves of bread, rather than feet.

Compression socks help.  And propping one's feet up on the wall or back of a sofa in the evening will bring the swelling down temporarily, which reduces some of the discomfort.

  • Drinking lots of water, elevating your feet when you can, exercise and massage can all help alleviate swelling.
    Good luck!

  • I call them Fred Flintstone feet.  Thankfully this time around I haven't had it unless I had a really long day on my feet, standing around a lot.  I'm a teacher and was worried I'd get really swollen, but moving around a lot (even though I'm on my feet) keep the circulation going.  I can't believe I'm still even wearing my rings! That definitely didn't happen with my last pregnancy!!
  • I second the suggestion for compression stockings.  Elevating your feet is the best thing you can do for them, but the stockings really help prevent the swelling if you can't get your feet up often at work.

  • I don't have the swelling this pregnancy that I did the last.  But my husband called my feel fankles (not cankles) foot-ankles.  Between my feet and ankles was where all of the swelling was.  I bought some cheap larger shoes to wear for the last part of my pg. Drink lots of water too.
